Steven Gerrard has called to deliver a Europa League success against Feyenoord as a tribute to Light defender Fernando Ricksen.
The worldwide, who produced over 250 appearances for the Ibrox club between 2006 and 2000 , was fighting engine neurone disease for six decades and died on Wednesday.
Gerrard wants them to triumph for Ricksen and is preparing his new players to face the Eredivisie side.
He said:”It is extremely sad news for everybody on the club and, even more to the point, his young family. On behalf of the club I would love to pay tribute. He was a player who had a career.
“I’m convinced there is going to be a lot of emotions in the arena and I believe Fernando deserves that. I am certain both sets of supporters will pay their worth.
“We request the fans to get into the team since I believe it could be a wonderful tribute to him if we could add a good performance and attempt to get maximum points.
“I believe everybody knows ahead of a ball is kicked, in case this was the case, we’d surely give it to him along with his loved ones.
“It is quite sad. I’m sure the fans are extremely sad now and also we who are accountable for Thursday’s functionality want to do all we can to attempt to get a win and devote it to him.”
The hosts will be without Ryan Kent, who tweaked a hamstring through the victory.
Gerrard has hinted he would be ready to throw Jamie Murphy back to the first-team fold after missing having a cruciate knee injury.
Jordan Jones suffered an accident through the Old Firm match and remains absent.
Feyenoord will soon be without Sven van Beek, while Jens Toornstra, Nicolai Jorgensen, Jan-Arie van der Heijden and Steven Berghuis are doubtful.
The only past meetings involving Feyenoord and also Rangers were at the 2001-02 UEFA Cup – the side won 4-3 on aggregate to winning the prize.
Rangers have played eight games in European competition this season, winning half the Europa League qualifying games (D2) while maintaining six blank sheets.
Feyenoord have lost seven of their last eight matches in European competitors, though they won their last such game in the 2017-18 Champions League against Napoli.
Alfredo Morelos scored eight goals in Rangers’ eight Europa League qualifying games this year. The Colombian was likewise the only Rangers player to score more than once in the Europa League last year (2).
Rangers striker Jermain Defoe has scored nine goals in his last nine Europa League matches, with each one of these coming for Spurs between 2013 and 2012.
This will be a fervent game. Feyenoord have a reputation. Feyenoord have the passion but aren’t currently bringing .
These nights, rangers enjoy and that is Steven Gerrard is not there. They have not clicked into gear just yet though. Jaap Stam’s negative will sit for 20-25 minutes and frustration could be caused by this around Ibrox – this is when they can pounce.
Alfredo Morelos is the threat along with Feyenoord will be turning him up if they could get him to see. He looks a great deal calmer than what he’s been previously! It’s not a simple night. It’ll be physical and stressed. I don’t know if Rangers really have the knowledge to make it through these games.
